- Install smoke detectors throughout your home, and check regularly to make sure that the batteries are working.
- Talk with all of your family members about a fire evacuation plan and practice it together.
- If you have children in your home, teach them what a smoke alarm sounds like, show them how to escape from their room in case of a fire, and make sure they know how to dial 9-1-1.
- Have fire extinguishers present in the home and know how to use them.
- Remember to turn off appliances, put out the fire in the fireplace, and blow out candles before leaving the home or going to bed.
