Accidents while cooking account for many injuries and fires in the home. Cooking, whether you’re using the oven or the stovetop, requires constant vigilance, precaution, and attention. When you’re cooking, never leave the area unattended; don’t fall asleep or leave the home while anything is cooking.
If you have small children or pets in the home, be sure to keep potential hazards out of their reach. Store chemicals in a high cabinet or use a child safety lock for lower cabinets. Place sharp knives and kitchen in a secured location. When cooking on the stovetop, turn handles away from the reach of children. When cooking on the stovetop, or in the oven, keep an eye on children and pets to make sure everyone is safe. Talk to your children about kitchen safety to make sure they understand what they should and should not do.
To prevent fires in your kitchen, keep flammable objects, like towels and cleaning products, away from the oven and stovetop. It’s also a good idea to store a small fire extinguisher somewhere in your kitchen. If you have a grease fire, don’t use water to put it out; smother the fire with a lid instead. If you have a fire in your oven, turn off the oven and do not open the door. Do not leave food cooking on the stovetop unattended.
If you receive an injury while cooking, like a burn or a cut, be sure to clean your injury and seek medical attention if necessary.
